If you have any money left over after Christmas, it's likely you'll be hitting the January sales to snap up a bargain! But the sales can be a minefield of overcrowded rails, messy shopfloors and elbow-shoving with other customers (not at Vivaldi, of course!) So we've compiled a few tips to help you make a beeline for those sale buys you really need - after all, an impulse buy is all very well, but it's only a bargain if you actually wear it...
Our top tip is not to be swayed by trends, but to look to fill the gaps in your wardrobe with things you really need, ideally classic pieces. While the high street may have discounted rails full of 1970s-inspired styles, that fringed suede jacket may not be looking so on-trend this time next year. Instead, look for timeless styles, ideally in classic colours. We know we've said it before, but a perfectly fitting LBD will last you years - and if it's got 30% off like these B Young or Bohemia versions here at Vivaldi, even better. The same line of thought applies to trousers - those printed flares may be calling out to you, but think about where and when you'd wear them! Instead, look for wearable styles that won't date, like a pair of black skinnies from Maison Scotch.
The sales are a great time to pick up a new winter coat. A high-ticket item, it's often the most expensive buy of the winter, but if you can find a really good one that will last you years at a discounted price, snap it up! It'll save you having to start the desperate hunt for the perfect coat come October. For casual weekend style, we'll be torn between this Maison Scotch hooded parka, or a short hooded puffa from Sandwich, both with 30% off.
Footwear's another great item to pick up at sale time - again, they can be pricey full price, so it's great to snap them up while discounted. But think carefully when it comes to shoes, and don't be swayed by Carrie-style shoe lust! While you might think you love those lime green platform wedges, how many occasions will you actually wear them to? Instead, sale time is great for picking up things like wearable work shoes to see you into the Spring, like these super-comfy patent slingback pumps from FLY London.
January's a great time to pick up some discounted knitwear - the next couple of months can be the coldest of the year, but we're all reluctant to spend too much on woolly jumpers when half the winter's already behind us. So look for some bargains that will see you through to the milder weather, and that can be brought out again come the Autumn. This discounted B Young cable jumper in on-trend grey is a chunky knit that will look great with jeans or black skinnies.
Buying pieces to take you into Spring isn't a bad idea - while you might think the sales is a time for stores to get rid of cosy winter stock, there's a lot of great transitional stock out there, too. Look for T-shirts, lightweight knits and printed jersey tunics, like this Lily & Me tunic or T-shirt, both with 30% off. Jersey or sweatshirt blazers are also a good purchase - wear now under your winter coat, and as a jacket on it's own come the warmer weather. We love this rich red Sandwich one. Just make sure you're still going to like your purchase come March and April!
Happy sales shopping!
