Autumn Layering

Well for once we can't complain about the weather - we've had a great summer/early autumn, but it's definitely shifted over the past week or so with some pretty chilly mornings and evenings, so we thought it might be helpful to share some tips on layering.

Start with the occasion - if you're going to be in and out of warm places and/or needing to strip off [eg shopping!!] opt for a base layer that's light and breathable such as a t-shirt or fitted shirt and layer it up with a warm jumper and a lightweight [possibly waterproof!] coat/jacket that you can take off when indoors. If it's windy choose a roll/turtle neck jumper to keep your neck warm:) On milder days a waistcoat or tank top are great alternatives to a jumper. And for the occasional super mild weather -opt for a gilet or large scarf wrapped around the shoulders instead of a jacket

On the other hand if you're going to be outside most of the day, a warm base layer is a must and can do the work of two other layers, without the bulk. Thermal t-shirts are great of course, but for a more fashion conscious choice, try a Body Hug. These breathable, lightweight tops are like a second skin, keeping you super warm without any excess bulk. Available in a range of colours [we have a new batch in!] they're well worth checking out :)

With a toasty under-layer, you just need a jumper/cardigan and warm coat or jacket to finish off. Cardigans can be a great choice, especially if there's a chance you may get overly warm eg on a walk. Again, if you don't want too many layers, opt for a turtle or roll-neck rather than a scarf. Choose a wool yarn such as merino which is particularly good for warmth without bulk, as are many of the recycled polyesters now available. If chunky is your style, consider wearing a lighter weight coat/jacket that you can wear open, so you don't over-heat. Also remember to keep things in proportion eg wide legged jeans tend to suit shorter, more fitted tops, whereas straight trousers/jeans work best with a big jumper or coat.

Autumn is a great time for shorter and/or lighter weight jackets & coats - and there are some fab styles out right now that will also work for Spring time when it comes round again!

For chilly evenings out, use a smart/pretty cardigan worn open to add warmth without hiding the main outfit. If you're not sure if the venue will be warm, consider a fine knit short sleeve/sleeveless top so you can stay dressy without being cold. Get a similar look wearing a waistcoat with nothing underneath!
